Episode 2: Composing Chorales for Marimba

Hello readers and viewers!  I want to thank you for your patience on the Marimba Progression Project.  I had a bit of a slip up here between the posting of Episode #1 and the recording of #2, which is not a good thing.  I had originally planned a video documentary of my Dubuque Residency, however I had some horrible technical problems with my video camera.  When I got home I then got the most wonderful news.  After years of waiting, I finally had a five octave marimba.

Since the arrival of my five octave I have been obsessing over it and practically never leaving its sight.  However, it’s time for me to return to the blogosphere with the continuation of the MPP:

Episode #1: Overestimating the Marimba

This first episode is based on a Collaborative Process question I received from Brian. In that blog I responded to his question about mistakes that young composers make when writing for the marimba. In this video I expand on the idea that some young composers write for the marimba as if it were a piano.

Here’s the Collab Blog post I mentioned in the video. As I mentioned, it lists examples of pieces that are well written from both a technical and musical point of view. To all other percussionists: if you come up with any other examples to help young composers please feel free to post them here!

Virtual Lesson: A Little Prayer

Here is my second Virtual Lesson, a performance and lesson on Evelyn Glennie’s “A Little Prayer.” Again, the point of this project is to help young marimbists who do not have the opportunity to study with a private instructor.

Performing in Burlington, IA

Before I begin with the new posts, I am doing a little bit of archiving.  So, here is one of my first well-done video blogs.  On April 21st, 2009 I performed a series of assemblies in Burlington, IA.  That evening I performed at an art gallery.
